Diane Rehm on Lightbulbs
Zia McCorgi by Cooner
I missed this episode a while back:

The show links are useful but this was the most helpful: http://www.lightbulboptions.org/files/OnePagePDF.pdf

It does not however point out that CFLs have a low probability of bursting into flames in their final days. This was brought up on the show though. Honestly LED so far seems like the most cost effective, safe, and environmental version. Especially considering I don't normally stick lights in my mouth.

LEDs are very efficient, yes. But they also require DC voltage and current regulation to get light. They also require heat sinking - they are not without losses.

A nice rule of thumb I use is to multiply the wattage of the LEDs by 8 and you have the equivalent incandescent bulb power. I've built all sorts of LED lights in the last 2 years and I'm about to launch a business selling them. The lighting on my trees in the front yard is a mere 3W each, but it's visibly far greater than that.

nothing is perfect but they do seem to fit most needs as I see them right now.

I try and avoid using wattage when I buy light bulbs anyway. I prefer lumen measurements. I'll keep shopping around but it was an interesting article to listen to.
