Worst quake in written modern history
Lets take a moment to remember that the Richter scale and modern geological measurement of seismological events is very new so our history on these things is very short. Further our population has grown larger and our buildings are no longer wooden and stuck at only being a few floors high. That all has an effect.

Yes I'm trying to rationalize.

Several very close friends of mine who I knew when i lived in Tokyo have family or themselves now live in the Fukushima region. None of them, as far as I know, were in the city hit the hardest. I have sent emails. I won't call for a while simply becuase I know that communication is more then a little swamped and it should be for emergencies. Ideally we will learn all is well. Ideally. In the mean time I am going to focus on the scientific aspects of this and try to avoid looking at pictures of the horrific human suffering.

Thank god for all those building codes and defenses the Japanese created to deal with seismic events. It saved a lot of lives.
